So it’s that weird holiday again. Columbus Day? Indigenous Peoples’ Day? Monday? Honestly, I never know what to call it anymore. Does anyone actually celebrate this? Like, with parties and stuff? Seems kinda odd to party about colonization. But hey, day off work, so I guess I shouldn’t complain.
Anyway, I’ve got the day free (thanks, random holiday!) and I’m sitting here thinking about what to do. Exploration, discovery, all that jazz… but like, on a smaller scale. Cuz let’s face it, I’m not sailing across any oceans anytime soon. Although, does anyone actually sail across oceans anymore? I mean, besides rich people on yachts. Note to self: look up modern ocean travel later. Could be interesting.
Maybe I’ll finally check out that new coffee shop down the street. Been meaning to for weeks. months? God, time flies. When did they even open? Feels like it was just yesterday when it was that old bookstore. Man, I miss that place. They had the comfiest chairs. Wonder if the coffee shop kept any of the old decor. Probably not. Everything’s all minimalist and instagram-worthy these days.
Or there’s that art exhibit at the community center. Something about local artists? Idk, saw a flyer but didn’t really read it. Might be cool tho. Last time I went to one of those, there was this guy who made sculptures out of old car parts. Kinda weird, but cool. Wonder if he’s still doing that. What was his name? Mitch? Mark? M-something.
Speaking of art, remember when we used to do those paint-by-numbers as kids? Wonder if they still make those for adults. Might be fun. Therapeutic, even. Note to self: look that up later. Could be a good way to de-stress after work. Lord knows I need it. This project at work is kicking my butt. Why did I agree to that deadline? Ugh, don’t think about work today. It’s a holiday. Sort of.
Could go for a walk in the park. There’s this little trail I’ve never taken, always wondered where it goes. Knowing my luck, probably just loops back to the entrance or something. But hey, might see a cool bird or something. Been meaning to get more exercise anyway. How long has it been since I used that fitness app? Months? Years? Should probably delete it at this point. Just taking up space on my phone.
Oh! Just remembered – my friend told me about this cooking class she took. All about making pasta from scratch. Sounds messy but kinda fun? Might be a good way to meet new people too. Not that I need more friends. But you know what I mean. Although, knowing me, I’d probably just end up covered in flour and somehow set off the smoke alarm. How do you even set off a smoke alarm making pasta? I’m sure I’d find a way.
Geez, is it lunchtime already? This day is flying by and I haven’t even left my couch. Typical. Should probably eat something. What’s even in the fridge? I really need to go grocery shopping. Been putting that off for way too long. Maybe I could try one of those meal delivery services. Are those any good? Seem expensive, but could be worth it if it means I actually eat real food instead of cereal for dinner again.
Maybe I should just binge that new show everyone’s talking about. What’s it called? Something about squids? No, that’s not right. Anyway, everyone at work won’t shut up about it. Might be good, might be overhyped. That’s the problem with these viral shows. Remember that one about the tigers? What a weird time that was.
But no, I should probably do SOMETHING. It’s a day off! Shouldn’t waste it. Even if all I do is walk around the block or try a new recipe. Baby steps, right? That’s what my therapist would say. Speaking of which, I should probably schedule another appointment. It’s been a while. Mental health is important and all that.
You know what? I’m just gonna get dressed and see where the day takes me. No plan. Just… go. Maybe I’ll discover something cool about my neighborhood. Or maybe I’ll just end up back here on the couch. Either way, it’s better than obsessing over what some guy did 500 years ago, right?
Who knows, maybe I’ll have some grand adventure. Discover a hidden treasure in my own backyard. Or more likely, just find that missing sock I’ve been looking for. Life’s funny like that. The real discoveries are never what you expect.
Alright, time to face the day. Or what’s left of it. Here goes nothing…
Wait, did I feed the cat? Better do that first. Can’t have her planning my demise while I’m out exploring. Again.
Okay, NOW I’m ready. I think. Maybe one more coffee for the road. Exploration requires caffeine, right? Pretty sure that’s a rule somewhere.
Here’s to random holidays and unexpected discoveries. Or at least, here’s to trying. That counts for something, doesn’t it?
