6 Essential Home Preparations for a Cozy Autumn

The days are getting shorter, the leaves are turning red and gold, and there’s a bite in the morning air. It’s fall! We are proud to present 6 easy at-home preparations for you to welcome autumn in a cozy way.

Declutter and Deep Clean

Cleaning out clutter makes way for autumn decorations to take over. Go through every room to eliminate things you no longer use or need. Give away or sell clothes and household goods you don’t want. Any broken or unusable items should be thrown out as well. Then, do a good deep clean. Clean walls, floors, windows, furniture, and all décor for a fresh start or a revival, and a blank slate for fall décor.

Update Décor with Fall Touches

Fall is a wonderful time of year for decorating. Putting up some warm fall decor will add a little bit of coziness to every room in your home. Fall decor warms up your home and makes you feel ready for some good old autumn days. Replace the lighter decor pieces from summer with slightly heavier pieces for fall. Pillows, throw blankets, and accent rugs in warmer tones of orange, red, brown, and yellow are ideal. Put out candles with fall scents, and display pinecones, acorns, and fall leaves in vases.

Transition Wardrobes to Fall Fashion

To prepare for autumn, it’s recommendable to get your wardrobe ready as well. To help you transition your fall wardrobe, here are some weather-appropriate essentials that will keep you comfortable at home around October without sacrificing your style. First, put all your summer clothes in their proper place. By this, I don’t mean cast them carelessly into a heap in the attic. I mean fold them up neatly and put them somewhere suitable in the wardrobe or dresser – where they’ll be, of course, waiting for you next year. Finally, break out your cozier fall clothes. Loungewear for at-home days could include shearling sweaters, long-sleeve tees, flannel shirts, cardigans, slippers, and fuzzy socks. Don’t forget outerwear – jackets, hats, scarves, and booties for your fall errands that include running outside.

Enjoy Cozy Bedding

When seasons start to change and temperatures drop a few degrees, it’s time to fill our beds with fluffies! Be it warm quilts and duvets or cozy cotton linens, now is the time to switch over from light summer bedding to warm bedding that feels like a warm hug. Go for flannel sheets and a fleece mattress pad for extra insulation. Put an extra blanket or quilt on the bed for chilly nights.

Display Fall Books

Place fiction books with autumnal themes (cozy mysteries are popular this time of year, as are autumn romances and other period romances), along with nonfiction books centered on autumn (pumpkin carving books are immensely popular, as are baking/cooking books and seasonal decorating books that focus on the home, as well as DIY craft books). Lay out coffee table books and fall-scented candles on coffee tables, nightstands, and shelves. Top with mini pumpkins to decorate. A blanket and throw pillows complete your fall cozy reading nook.

Enjoy Warm Beverages

Classic apple cider is a must. Add some mulling spices such as cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and nutmeg to turn your cider into mulled cider, and sweeten it with honey or maple syrup. Pumpkin spice coffee predictably captures the hearts and minds of consumers each October. Pumpkin spice lattes are easy to make at home as well. Then there’s hot chocolate, chai tea, and many different tea blends to enjoy.
