The Over-60 Guide: What Women Should Stop—and Start—Doing

Life after 60 is a beautiful thing. Don’t worry about getting older or wondering what life is going to bring next. Embrace your life and enjoy being over 60. With the proper perspective, you can make your life rich and full of adventures. However, these are things that you need to stop doing immediately.

Mental Health

When you get older, you can’t ignore mental health because it can harm you more than you think. Feelings of sadness, anxiety, or depression can cause issues that put your health in jeopardy, and they can prevent you from taking care of yourself. Talking to a counselor will help significantly in this regard.

Financial Planning

Finances don’t end at 60. Sometimes it gets harder. Because of the current times, money is tight for everyone, and we need to learn how to budget and invest. You should also consider long-term security along with estate planning. This may be scary, but it’s better to take care of it now rather than later.

Eating Unhealthy

No matter what your age, you need to eat healthily. Your body needs more nutrients, and overloading it with processed foods and sugar isn’t the solution you need. If you keep doing it at this age, your risk for hypertension and diabetes skyrockets, and you need to opt for protein and healthy food.

Sun Protection

It’s easy to overlook sun protection, but this isn’t a good thing. Most people, when they’re young, don’t think about it, and it comes back to bite them. The same is true at your age. Skin cancer remains a considerable risk now that you’re older. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still affect you.

Sleep

Sorry to say, but when you’re older, you can’t party all night with a book or movies and stay up until 10 A.M.; your body just won’t allow it. When you don’t sleep, your brain doesn’t function at its best, and your immune system becomes weak, meaning that you can’t fight off illnesses effectively.

Get Screened

Skipping your screenings is a big mistake that you shouldn’t be making. Get screened because cancer, osteoporosis, and other issues are a danger for adults over 60. Most of these screenings are yearly. By attending all of your exams, you’ll be able to detect any problems beforehand and address them before they become serious.

Let’s Get Up

As we age, the need for physical activity becomes greater. You need to maintain your strength as you age. If you’re moving regularly, then you’re lowering your risk of falling. In addition, the healthier you are, the longer you live. So take that dance class or go on a nice stroll.

Your Teeth

Your teeth are going to need care as you get older. Gum disease is connected to heart disease, diabetes, and other issues that you may not be aware of. If you find that your gums are bleeding, you’re already in trouble and need to address it. Make sure that you’re visiting a dentist regularly as well.

Hobbies

You need to keep your hobbies and do things that make you happy. Not having hobbies can hurt your sense of well-being, and you need to reclaim your passions and find out what brings you joy if you haven’t already. Many people think that this is the best time to do so.

Shoes

Foot health is another issue you’ll face as you get older. Without proper footwear, your mobility suffers. You can experience back pain, balance issues, and even falls. It’s worth visiting an orthopedic specialist because you can find proper shoes and help ensure that you’re improving your walking and overall health.

Drink Water

No matter how old you are, you need water. As we age, we might not recognize that we’re getting thirsty and may drink less as a result. Because of this, staying hydrated becomes more difficult. You need to consume at least eight glasses of water, and you can also eat hydrating foods such as soup.

Clutter

Being a hoarder is never a good thing. Too much clutter can create stress, lead to depression, and even create safety hazards. Instead of keeping things you’re not using, donate them and let someone who needs them use them. You’ll find that getting rid of things you don’t need can help you feel lighter.

Let Things Go

Holding on to resentment or grudges isn’t something you need to do. It harms your mental and physical health because of stress, and it can also raise your blood pressure. Over time, these emotional burdens make it harder to find peace. Practice forgiveness and you’ll experience more tranquility.

Smoking

Cigarettes take a huge toll on the body, and they can increase the chances of having a stroke or heart disease. Smoking also limits your oxygen intake, making it harder to breathe. Since heart disease is more prominent as you age, this is something to pay extra attention to.

Isolation

Loneliness is another issue that affects us as we get older, and it’s essential to maintain social connections, friendships, and get yourself out there. Social interaction and human connection are vital. By making this a focus, you will feel happier and more connected to yourself and others.

Take Care Of Yourself

The need to take care of ourselves doesn’t fade as we get older—it grows stronger. Use this list as a reminder that you need to be taking care of yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally to keep yourself in the best condition possible and to ensure that you feel happy and free.
