The Lord of the Fries: Our Top 15 Fast Food Picks

French fries are the perfect snack and the best companion for meals. They’re salty and tasty, and we don’t mind that they might not be the healthiest. When it comes to French fries, though, which is the best? We’ve done the legwork and found the best of the best. Check out our list of the top 15 to see where your favorite ranks.

15. Del Taco

Now, as a whole, Del Taco is awesome and their chicken tacos are mouthwatering, but their fries… not so much. You’ll eat them only because they come with the meal, but they’re not particularly great. You don’t get excited about them. However, some swear that the restaurant’s preparation is superior and that the fries are difficult to perfect.

14. Dairy Queen

This is a case where the restaurant is good overall, but the fries just don’t have that wow factor. If you’re going to Dairy Queen, it’s not for the fries; it’s for the ice cream. But how many times have you heard someone talk about the fries? Probably hardly ever, since they’re not the main attraction. Many say they taste too rubbery and lack crispness and flavor.

13. Sonic

Sonic’s fries aren’t terrible. Like the others on this list, they’re just not the star attraction. If you do get them, they’re usually hot and good most of the time. However, Sonic is better known for other menu items, such as tater tots.

12. Zaxby’s

These fries are actually okay. They could use a bit more spice to truly shine. This company is famous for seasoning their food, and people love that the fries are already spiced. They just want a stronger flavor. Other than that, they’re solid fries and not too bad.

11. Hardee’s

The fries here are alright. They have a decent texture with a nice crispiness. The salt-to-fry ratio is also pretty good, so they rate fairly well overall. Most people seem to like them, agreeing that the fries are simply okay—nothing great, but nothing awful either.

10. Five Guys

We may get heat for placing these lower on the list, but these fries tend to get soggy, are full of grease, and often lack the desired crispiness. That doesn’t mean they’re awful; they actually taste pretty good, and Five Guys has a loyal following. Try the seasoning on your fries and they’ll taste much better.

9. KFC

According to the company, it took over six decades to perfect these fries and make them tasty. They have a solid following. The thing is, you also want the potatoes and biscuits. However, the fries are seasoned, crisp, and have a good texture. They say the seasoning on the fries is the same as on the chicken.

8. Jack In The Box

One of my personal favorites, it ranks in the middle because others haven’t yet reached the level of curly fry goodness. You can get regular or curly fries here, and the curly ones are the best. The regular fries are good, but the curly fries come with extra seasoning and a smoky barbecue flavor that enhances their texture.

7. Popeyes

Always full of good food, Popeyes offers amazing fried chicken, great sauces, and other items. As for the fries, they may not be as outstanding as the other menu items, but they’re still good. They have a smoky kick and are tossed in seasoned flour to add extra crispness.

6. Chick-fil-A

They only offer waffle fries, and if you like waffle fries, this is the place for you. Try them with one of their many dipping sauces, and you can’t go wrong. The texture is consistent, and they’re always well-cooked. The only complaint is that they don’t put enough fries in a container.

5. Arby’s

The curly fries here are the best. In the realm of fast food fries, these curly fries are a great option because they have a good texture and taste awesome with their peppery seasoning. One thing to note is that sometimes you get soft fries and other times crispy ones.

4. Burger King

Burger King’s patrons have occasionally been known to wolf down some fries with their meal. The potatoes have a balanced salt ratio, are larger than those at other chains, and are cut thicker. They also have a lightly browned texture that makes them crisp.

3. Wendy’s

Made with unpeeled potatoes, each fry has a unique texture with a hint of potato skin on the end. They are fried to perfection, and the salt is just right. Most people say that these are their favorite classic fries. You don’t need any dipping sauce, though they’re amazing with it.

2. Taco Bell

What started as a fad quickly became a fan favorite. Their fries are soft, taste amazing with the seasoning, and we wish there was an endless supply. The combination with nacho cheese is delightful every time you eat them. They’re larger than average, and people love the seasoning. If you haven’t tried them, get on it!

1. McDonald’s

Topping the list because when you think of French fries, this is the first brand that comes to mind. They offer a great texture with a combination of soft and crispy fries. The taste is enhanced by the perfect balance of salt, bringing comfort to many people. However, die-hard fans still prefer the old recipe over the new one.

Hungry Yet?

The fries on this list vary in many ways, but you can see which ones make the cut and which may not measure up. Whether you prefer curly fries, a smoky flavor, or classic regular fries that evoke nostalgia, there’s something for everyone. Just remember to grab some sauce and ask for extra seasoning—you can’t go wrong.
