It isn’t too often that we hear “safe” and “road” working together synonymously. But from smooth highways to strict traffic laws, these countries are doing it right when it comes to road safety. Whether you’re renting a car abroad or planning an epic road trip, here are 15 countries where you can hit the road with peace of mind. (Hand off the horn!)
Norway

Known for stunning fjords and near-flawless infrastructure, Norway also has one of the lowest traffic fatality rates in the world. That has to count for something, right? Strict laws, well-maintained roads, and a culture of caution keep drivers safe. It might be something to do with the Norwegian calmness, too.
Switzerland

Breathtaking alpine routes join forces with meticulously enforced road rules. Switzerland’s roads are in excellent condition, and the locals are disciplined behind the wheel. There’s no tolerance for speeding and alcohol, so you can expect a heavy penalty if you don’t abide by the rules. It’s worth it, and the strictness pays off.
Iceland

Few driving routes are as picturesque as Iceland’s. With minimal traffic and incredible views, Iceland is a road-tripper’s dream. While the weather can be harsh at times, the country has low accident rates and high driver awareness, especially on the iconic Ring Road. Take your time and soak up the views. They’re worth it.
Japan

Despite its high urban density, Japan has remarkably safe roads thanks to strict testing, tech-savvy traffic systems, and a culture of politeness. Roads are clearly marked, and drivers are generally very considerate. Everyone stops and waits, and drivers are generally hesitant to honk at a fellow driver. There’s a lot to be said for driver zen.
Finland

Extreme snow and ice don’t stop Finland from being one of the safest countries to drive in. Drivers are trained for extreme weather, and the roads are well-prepared for every season. Other countries could take a leaf out of their book and plan ahead more efficiently. It makes for smooth driving with no road rage drama.
Germany

With their firm and resolute manner, it’s no surprise that Germans take driving seriously. Yes, there are sections of the autobahn without speed limits, but Germany still has some of Europe’s lowest accident rates. The secret? Rigorous driver training and impeccably maintained roads. We aren’t shocked. They always seem to get it right.
New Zealand

New Zealand offers scenic drives and low traffic volume, especially on the South Island. Road signs are clear, and locals are courteous. (The fact that they have a no litter policy gives us insight into their nature.) It’s all about respect for their beautiful country. Just remember, they drive on the left! Be prepared.
Netherlands

Cyclist-heavy Netherlands might surprise you, but it’s one of the safest places to drive. Yes, it may not make sense when bicycles meet cars, but it just does. Urban roads are well designed, signage is excellent, and strict enforcement keeps speeds in check. Everyone respects each other, and that’s what makes it a great place to take a road trip.
Australia

It shouldn’t be a surprise with their endless outback roads, but Australia’s roads are wide, well-marked, and designed for long-distance travel. With heavy enforcement in place and solid infrastructure, it’s a safe place for both locals and tourists to drive. At worst, long drives can be slightly laborious, but there’s always something incredible not too far ahead. Watch out for kangaroos!
Austria

The home of The Sound of Music is unsurprisingly picture perfect, and Austria blends mountain drives with motorway safety. The country scores highly for road conditions, vehicle safety standards, and traffic law enforcement, making it a solid choice for confident road-trippers. The views are worth a slow, relaxing drive. You don’t want to miss anything.
Ireland

With lush scenery and charming country roads, Ireland keeps safety top of mind with lower speed limits, clear signage, and ongoing investment in road maintenance. Just be ready for narrow rural lanes; they can be tricky to navigate when two cars are head-on. Expect to courteously yield for your fellow driver, and you’ll stay in their good books.
Singapore

Singapore doesn’t seem the obvious choice with its bustling environment, but it seems to tick the safe roads box too. With modern infrastructure and heavy penalties for violations, Singapore’s roads are among the safest in Asia. Traffic is orderly, and city driving is surprisingly stress-free. Respect for fellow drivers goes a long way here.
Denmark

Beautiful Denmark is always worth a visit, and the laid-back nature of the locals transfers to the road. Denmark’s compact size and high driver standards make for an easy, safe road trip. Expect courteous drivers, well-lit roads, and a strong cycling infrastructure that enhances overall safety. Give your fellow drivers a wave. They’re super friendly.
Canada

Think long, clean roads that look almost too perfect to be real. From urban expressways to remote mountain highways, Canada’s road system is vast and well-managed. Driver courtesy, rigorous licensing, and regular maintenance help make it one of the safest globally. And the Canadians are always happy to welcome tourists to their beautiful land.
United Arab Emirates (UAE)

It was once known for reckless driving and hosted some of the world’s most dangerous roads. (Dubai’s Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road springs to mind.) But the UAE has significantly improved its road safety through strict enforcement, smart tech, and modern highways. Fatality rates have dropped dramatically in recent years. Glad to hear.
