From Samples to Savings: 11 Tips Every Costco Shopper Should Know

If you’re walking into Costco for the first time, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, but the experience is worth it. To get the most out of each visit, consider our helpful insider tips on the store. They’ll help you optimize your membership and ensure that the cost is worth it.

Weekends

If you’re someone who likes to snack while you shop, you should come to the store on the weekend. Foot traffic is heaviest on these days, and the manufacturers put out samples to try and get you to buy things. They do this from Thursday to Sunday, knowing that people do most of their shopping after the work week.

Disorientation

The store is nicknamed “the treasure hunt,” and there’s a reason for it. There’s a purpose behind not marking its aisles the way a regular store does. This is done intentionally so they can market to you in a targeted way. They highlight seasonal or new products in a manner that makes you look at items you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.

Less Variety

Most stores have over 100,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs) in their systems. Costco, on the other hand, only keeps around 4,000. That means you won’t see ten different types of mustard or mayonnaise. However, you’ll get bargain prices, good quality items, and it’s easy to buy in bulk.

Buy It Quick

Here’s another thing you should know. The idea behind the seasonal items is a first-in, first-out approach. They try to avoid having any leftover items whenever possible. For example, they will be out of Christmas items by mid-month, and you won’t find them by the end of the month. Get the items while you can because you won’t find them if you wait.

Salmon

The Atlantic salmon is considered wasteless compared to other brands because it is said to have a 100% yield. The salmon has no bones, no skin, and no excess fat. It’s also available at a much better price, which is excellent for those who want to stock up.

Store Brand

The Kirkland Signature brand is not something to sleep on. It’s a great brand with good quality, and you can get a variety of items at a reasonable price. If you’re a savvy shopper, you can find everything from household goods to high-end vodka with a considerable following. Don’t forget to try the cheeses they offer, too.

Returns

You shouldn’t abuse the return policy, but if you honestly don’t like an item or change your mind, you can return it with or without a receipt, as they have a computer system that can locate the sale for you. There are exceptions, such as items like diamonds and electronics, where returns may not be possible.

Lunch

Lunch at Costco is one of the best offerings they have. Their hot dogs are amazing, and they’re super cheap. If you’ve had a hard month, a hot dog and a drink for about two dollars is better than eating ramen for a week. They keep prices low to ensure their customers are always satisfied.

Pick A Tier

There are two tiers of membership: a regular option and an executive option. If you value extra perks, opt for the executive option. It costs a bit more, but it’s worth it because one of the benefits is getting 2% back annually. Essentially, you get your money back in savings within the first few months, depending on how much you buy weekly.

Alcohol

If you’re a non-member, you’ll have to check your local store for this one, but you may still be able to buy alcohol depending on the location. You’ll still get the deals and discounts that members do. Because they have a great selection, you’ll find almost anything here, including quality vodka.

Come Shop

Costco is a great place to shop, offering a wide range of products. If you like buying in bulk, saving thousands a year, and even getting good travel deals with your membership, take advantage of these tips and you’ll be able to shop at Costco like a pro.
