10 Pitstops You Should Make On Your Pacific Surfliner Voyage

The Pacific Surfliner is a coastal train service that runs a 351-mile route along California. The route is known for its breathtaking seaside views. It starts in San Luis Obispo and ends in San Diego, and is the second busiest inter-city passenger rail corridor in the U.S., with nearly 3 million riders every year. Come with us as we take you on the journey down the West Coast. Here are 10 places you should visit when you ride the Pacific Surfliner.

San Luis Obispo

The first stop on the Pacific Surfliner we suggest is San Luis Obispo, or “SLO.” Its charming downtown area is a stone’s throw from the station and is comfortably walkable. Venture further and explore the numerous hiking trails on Bishop’s Peak (pictured above), Montaña de Oro State Park, and around Morro Bay. SLO also has stunning coastal views and a laid-back vibe.

Santa Barbara

The train station is conveniently located near the water and the downtown area in this beachside town. The Mediterranean climate makes Santa Barbara inviting all year round. Explore its unique attractions, such as the Santa Barbara Zoo and the Funk Zone, an urban wine tasting trail that offers more than 20 rooms for wine enthusiasts. Restaurants and shops downtown also provide good food and excellent shopping.

Ventura

Ventura offers passengers breathtaking coastal views. Hop off in Ventura and enjoy its world-famous surfing beaches. Explore “Old Town Moorpark,” the historic district with shops, gardens, and authentic Mexican food. The station is close to a boat launch to the Channel Islands, which boasts unique wildlife, like the island fox, island deer mouse, spotted skunk, and island night lizard.

Los Angeles

From the LA station, transportation is available to just about any location in the city. Visit the iconic Hollywood neighborhood sign and see the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Catch a musical performance at the Hollywood Bowl or tour Warner Bros or Universal Studios. Los Angeles is a large city with a never-ending list of great attractions.

Anaheim

One of the appeals of this stop is the free bus service. Passengers of the Surfliner can get free transportation to most parts of the city. Is your voyage making you hungry? Visit the Anaheim Packing District, a historic citrus factory preserved and refitted as a food hall with over 30 gourmet vendors. Looking for fun? Buy a day pass to Disneyland and remember the magic from your childhood.

Santa Ana

Located in the heart of Orange County, Santa Ana offers a diverse range of attractions. You can view art at its numerous art galleries or discover the city’s history at museums such as the Heritage Museum of Orange County or Bowers Museum. You can also learn about aviation history at the Lyon Air Museum. Enjoy the charming historic downtown with iconic buildings like the Old Orange County Courthouse.

San Juan Capistrano

The Mission San Juan Capistrano is a major attraction with its beautiful architecture, gardens, and exhibits. Along with the Los Rios Historic District, get a glimpse of California’s past and the town’s early development. Every year, the city, a bird sanctuary by law, celebrates the return of the thousands of cliff swallows. Visit San Juan Capistrano in the spring and witness a true natural phenomenon.

Solana Beach

Passengers aboard the Surfliner often stop at Solana Beach for its incredible coastal views. Popular beaches such as Fletcher Cove and Tide Beach Park attract sunbathers and marine life enthusiasts with their soft sand, tide pools, and coral reefs. The Cedros Design District also offers a vibrant area of boutiques, art galleries, and cafes from over 80 vendors. The community’s laid-back vibe makes it a pleasant place to explore or relax.

San Diego – Santa Fe Depot

The Santa Fe Depot in central San Diego is a historic landmark for its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. It was built in celebration of the construction of the Panama Canal. Many passengers stop here, making it one of the busiest Amtrak stations. The depot provides a comfortable indoor waiting area with a gift shop and a cafe. It’s well-connected to other parts of the city and has convenient public transportation.

Irvine

Our final stop on the Pacific Surfliner is Irvine, California. Passengers can enjoy hiking, shopping, and exploring attractions.
