Calling Over Cash: 10 Jobs People Choose Despite the Low Pay

Most people say that they would never work a low-paying job. However, most people find themselves doing it anyway because of personal fulfillment, satisfaction, and personal values. It could also be due to lifestyle factors and the desire to spend more time with their families. Whatever the reason, here are low-paying jobs that people still want.

Actor

Now, for this one, we’re not talking about the ones that make it to Hollywood. We’re talking about actors who struggle to find roles and only seem to get low-paying parts. Smaller productions, local theaters, and other venues can only pay small amounts. The possibility of getting discovered is real, but most never make it that far. Many famous actors have recognized this challenge and created funding opportunities so that actors can still pay rent while they’re trying to be discovered.

Writer

There are many ways to be a writer—novels, freelance work, journalism, etc. Unfortunately, it’s not a job that pays the best. Most people prioritize steady work over getting paid fairly. Many strive for a stable salary and a living wage. The competition is incredibly fierce, and many people agree to “pay” in exposure. However, the love of writing pushes people to keep going.

Environmental Activist

This career is driven by love. In most cases, it’s a low-paying field or even mostly volunteer work. However, activism attracts those who genuinely care and have a true passion for the planet. You’ll see cleanups, educational workshops, and efforts to encourage people to do their best to help the environment. The work these individuals do has a great impact, and most care less about the money than about creating real change.

Childcare Workers

Childcare is one of the most expensive services (think daycare), but unfortunately, babysitters and childcare workers aren’t paid much. People do it for the love of helping families, even though the pay is significantly below the national average for many other occupations. While this creates economic instability for their families and the labor is incredibly undervalued, most workers stay on, knowing that ultimately they are doing good for others.

Chef

Becoming a chef is a dream for many people. The unfortunate reality is that it doesn’t happen for a lot of individuals. Many go to college, find themselves in debt, work long hours, and perform physically demanding tasks. Even after all this, they may still not get promoted to chef. It’s also incredibly difficult to open your own restaurant and gain popularity, so it’s honestly the love of food and creating dishes for others to enjoy that keeps these people going.

Artist

Artists are also undervalued, with some believing you can “pay” in exposure. The income is low, and many artists struggle to make a living, but their love for illustration, sculpture, and painting keeps them going and gives them hope to keep trying. Unfortunately, some artists give up, but most never lose the ability to express themselves through their work.

Teacher

Teaching is a profession that is never paid what it deserves. Many teachers even buy supplies for their students out of their own pockets and may go hungry as a result. Not to mention, the hours are long, respect is minimal, and it causes people to struggle with bills while trying to maintain a livable lifestyle. The love for education and the passion for ensuring the next generation thrives keeps many teachers dedicated to the profession, with hope for a better future.

Social Worker

Social workers have a deep commitment to helping people and ensuring children are safe. The emotional rewards are far greater than the financial compensation in their minds. The cases can be emotionally draining and challenging. There are many drawbacks, and individuals often need additional support. If you decide to pursue this career, know that your heart may ache and your wallet may suffer, but you’ll be doing important work for children who need a voice.

Musician

Music has the ability to connect people all over the world and is a beautiful gift. If you’re a famous musician, you can earn quite a bit. However, many never reach that level of success. In this case, you may experience financial instability while trying to reach your dream. The excitement of performing live, the love of music, and the passion for creating your own songs keep people striving to break into the industry.

Nonprofit Workers

Working in a nonprofit capacity is almost always low pay or no pay at all. It attracts many people because it gives them the opportunity to make a real difference in the world. People need help, and unfortunately, many are suffering in unimaginable ways. The satisfaction of knowing you’re doing something worthwhile is one of the best rewards, making this career extremely fulfilling.

Making A Difference

While most of these jobs are extremely low-paying, each of them can make a difference in the world. Writers tell stories and give people a voice, music connects people on an emotional level, and other jobs create voices for the oppressed and the hurting. Even though these jobs aren’t well-paid, the chance to contribute positively to the world outweighs the negatives.
