When you’re cleaning your home, there’s a very good chance that you’re forgetting things that should be on your list. We all hit the obvious items, but many often go unnoticed. Another issue is that people think you can rinse it and it’s okay, but that’s not the case. They need more attention, and some need deep cleaning. As such, we’ve created a list to help you see what needs more attention.
Dishwasher Filter

Most people don’t think about cleaning this at all, much less monthly. However, if the filter is left dirty, it allows grime to accumulate on dishes, and food can become trapped inside the filter, potentially starting to decay. The filter is removable and should be cleaned monthly to prevent sanitation issues and bacterial growth.
Ceiling Fans

It’s essential to wipe down fan blades to maintain air quality and prevent dust from circulating throughout the room. If it does, you’ll find that the air quality is poor and dust causes allergies. If you have a lot of buildup, you’ll notice an imbalance in the blades, which can affect the motor.
Pet Bowls

Pet bowls should be cleaned more than once a month. If you’re not doing that or washing them at all, it creates a problem that could cause illness or even death to your pet. If you’re just rinsing them daily, the bowl could still harbor E. coli, Salmonella, or a host of other bacteria. A sticky biofilm often forms on surfaces like these, making them more challenging to clean. While stainless steel is more resistant, it still requires cleaning.
Light Switches

The switch plates are a surface that is constantly touched but never cleaned. They collect germs and bacteria even if they look clean, and if you have a colored plate, it hides dirt and carries bacteria that you can’t see. You should wipe them down regularly to help stop the transfer of germs and create a healthier home.
Shower Curtain Liner

The shower curtain is a prime location for accumulating soap scum, dirt, and mold. If you don’t clean it, mildew can appear and begin to develop as well. The best way to avoid this is to wash the liner regularly. Many sites will say the easiest thing to do is to throw the liner and your towels in the washing machine.
Toilet Tank

Specifically, you want to clean the interior of the toilet tank because mineral buildup can occur. Cleaning it is simple: turn the water supply off, flush the toilet to ensure the tank is drained, and then wash it with a brush or sponge. Use a cleaning solution, such as vinegar or a toilet bowl cleaner. Be sure to rinse the tank thoroughly before turning the water back on.
Garbage Disposal Blades

Spoiled food scraps under flaps can create kitchen odors, among other things. Never stick your hand or anyone else’s down the garbage disposal to retrieve something or clean it. It’s dangerous and you’ll get hurt. Instead, use ice cubes and vinegar, which will naturally and easily clean the blades and freshen the smell of your sink.
Remote Controls

These are another item that is rarely cleaned, and they should be because they are a breeding ground for grease, bacteria, and microbes. It’s not a good idea to use excessive amounts of disinfectants because they can wear out the controllers more quickly. Instead, use a gentle cleaning system to keep the controllers clean.
Exhaust Fan

Exhaust fans are typically found in the bathroom, and they can block airflow if not cleaned properly. If you leave it unmaintained, you can have a fire hazard on your hands. Regularly clean the motor and the vent (carefully), and you’ll be able to improve the safety and air quality of your home as well as prevent mildew.
Washing Machine

The drum of the washing machine accumulates grime from detergent and softener, which creates issues. The residue traps moisture, creating mold under the rubber seal. Monthly cleaning will help prevent the mold from spreading to clothes. An easy way to do this is to use white vinegar and baking soda. Pour half a cup of baking soda into the drum and two cups of vinegar into the detergent dispenser before running a hot wash cycle. If you need something more substantial, consider washing machine cleaners.
Cleaning Schedule

While it may seem like no home ever gets truly clean, having a cleaning schedule will help because it provides an idea of what needs to be done and when. With this list, you’ll see what you probably don’t ever think about, but requires the tender loving care. Dedicate some time to these areas and you’ll see a healthier home emerge.
