Not only will your garden smell fresh and relaxing, but you’ll also find your spirits are lifted each time you venture out.

Lavender

Lavender is the go-to scent for relaxation. It’s the smell of every yoga studio, everywhere. This calming flower thrives in sunny spots and gives your garden that dreamy, zen-like scent. It’s also a magnet for bees, butterflies, and stressed-out humans. Plant it near paths or patios so you catch a whiff every time you walk by.

Roses (The Old-Fashioned Kind)

Few scents match the classic rose. And not all roses are created equal. Some modern hybrids are bred more for looks than scent. Who knew? But the classic, old-school varieties are the best. Damask, Bourbon, and English roses will fill the air with a sweet, romantic perfume that no candle can capture.

Sweet Peas

Don’t be fooled by their slight and fragile appearance, sweet peas pack a serious punch when it comes to scent. They bloom in early summer and smell like a soft floral heaven. They love cool temps, full sun, and a bit of support from yours truly. Pick a few for a vase, and your whole kitchen will smell divine.

Jasmine

Jasmine at dusk is a dream scent like no other. The reason being that the scent intensifies as the sun goes down leaving your garden with a rich, exotic fragrance. It pretty much feels straight out of a fairytale. Perfect for warm climates and patios where you like to sit and sip something nice after dark.

Lilacs

It’s one of the strongest and most nostalgic garden scents. Lilacs bloom for just a few weeks in spring, so you have to jump in quickly. But wow, what a few weeks they are. The fragrance is sweet, powdery, and unforgettable. Plant them near windows so you catch their scent in the breeze.

Gardenias

If you’re into rich, creamy, almost tropical scents, gardenias are your best friend. And who isn’t into a taste of the tropics? Their glossy green leaves and snow-white blooms are stunning, but it’s the intoxicating perfume that you’ll fall for. They’re a bit fussy, but when they’re looked after, they’re pretty much flower royalty.

Peonies

Not all peonies are super fragrant, but when you get one that is, it’s a wow moment. The scent can be rosy, spicy, or citrusy, depending on the variety you choose. Go for a lucky dip and see what happens. Combine that with their over-the-top blooms, and you’ve got the definition of garden glamour.

Dianthus (a.k.a. Pinks)

These little cuties smell like cloves and cinnamon all in one. Crazy, right? They’re low-maintenance, colorful, and bloom like champs. Ideal for borders, rock gardens, or anywhere you want a spicy-sweet surprise when you lean in close. Plus, they’re tougher than they look. In truth, they have tough faces that you wouldn’t mess with.

Phlox

Don’t overlook this cottage garden staple. Tall phlox varieties release a soft, sweet scent that gets stronger at dusk. They’re reliable bloomers, come in a load of colors, and give that old-fashioned garden charm with very little fuss and maintenance. Perfect for filling in gaps and drawing in butterflies by the dozen. Lush.

Honeysuckle

Ah, yes. Wild, nostalgic, and almost syrupy-sweet, honeysuckle will take you straight back to childhood summers. It’s a climbing plant that loves to scramble over fences, arches, and trellises, and fills the air with that golden, heady perfume that bees (and humans) can’t resist. Every garden needs one, even if just for the name alone.
